Foundation repair
When a foundation wall cracks, bows or lets water in, we find what's pushing on it before we repair the block or stone, so the patch isn't chasing a symptom.
Blockworks Columbia Concrete and Masonry repairs chimneys, worn mortar and cracked brick in Columbia and nearby cities like Jefferson City and Fulton. We also build retaining walls for sloped yards that keep washing out.

Blockworks Columbia Concrete and Masonry is a masonry contractor in Columbia, MO, and we handle 16 kinds of brick, block and stone work, from fixing what's worn to building what's new. Most calls are a chimney losing brick, mortar washing out of the joints or a crack someone wants fixed so it doesn't show. The price mostly comes down to how much is damaged, how hard the work is to reach and how closely new brick has to match the old. The schedule turns on the season and any permit your address calls for. The estimate I write on site gives you your own number.

When a foundation wall cracks, bows or lets water in, we find what's pushing on it before we repair the block or stone, so the patch isn't chasing a symptom.

Cracked caps, crumbling joints and brick flaking off near the top are what we usually find, and we rebuild only as far down as the damage actually goes.

We grind out worn mortar and pack in new mortar matched in color and strength to the old, because mortar harder than old brick can crack the brick itself.

For cracked, chipped or loose brick, we cut out the bad ones and set replacements picked to match your house in size, color and texture, so the repair blends in.

A paver driveway is laid on a packed gravel base, so single pavers can be lifted and reset later instead of tearing out a whole cracked slab.

For a sloped yard that's sliding or washing out, we build block or stone walls with drainage behind them, because trapped water is usually what pushes a wall over.

On an older brick or stone home, we look the whole thing over, then clean, repoint and replace only what needs it so the house still looks like itself.

We build brick and stone fireplaces and settle the size, the look and the hearth with you before the first row of brick goes down.

Veneer is a thin layer of natural or manufactured stone set over an existing wall, so a foundation, chimney or entry gets the look of stone without the weight.

We build block walls for garages, sheds and privacy screens on a concrete footing, adding steel and grout in the hollow cores where the wall has to carry more.

For additions, garages and new homes, we lay block foundation walls straight and square, because every wall built on top inherits any mistake made down there.

We build the brick, block or stone structure for an outdoor kitchen and plan where the grill, sink and storage doors sit before the first block is set.

A new walkway in brick, pavers or stone gets a packed base and a slight slope so water runs off instead of pooling by your door.

From garden walls to new brick on an addition, we pick brick and mortar color to suit your house, so the new wall looks like it was always there.

We lay natural stone for walls, steps, columns and chimneys, fitting each piece by hand so the joints stay tight and the wall looks settled instead of stacked.

Pointing fills joints where the mortar has only started to wear, a lighter job than full tuckpointing that we'll recommend when it's all your wall needs.
I learned this trade as a helper, mixing mortar and hauling brick for an old mason who made me learn every joint by hand, and we've been in business since 2013. Our about page has the rest of that story.
What I care about most is finding out what's really wrong before anybody picks up a trowel, because a fix that misses the cause just comes back. We're licensed and insured, and our promise is satisfaction guaranteed. Call (573) 530-1031 or send us a note and I'll come take a look.
The person who looks at your house and answers your questions is a mason, not a salesman, so what you hear about the job comes from someone who's done it.
If a few bricks and some fresh mortar will do it, I'll tell you straight, and you won't pay to rebuild a chimney that only needed a repair.
I explain what I see in plain words and show you the photos, so you understand what's wrong with the wall before you decide anything.
Here's how a job goes with us, from the first phone call to the last walkthrough.
When you call, I come out myself and look the job over with you, talking through what I see, what's likely causing it and what your options are.
You get a written estimate, and once you're ready we set a start date that suits the weather the work needs.
Our lead mason runs the crew on site, I stop by to check the work as it goes, and we walk the finished job together before we pack up.
These example photos show finishes, mortar colors and layouts worth talking over, from tight brick joints to rough stone and patterned paver driveways.
Send your address and what's going on. We'll get back to you within one business day to set a time, and I'll come out, look it over and write your estimate, with no obligation.
The estimate costs nothing and happens on site, because I can't judge worn mortar or a crack properly from a phone photo.
We handle worn chimneys and new paver driveways alike, so if you've got a repair now and a walkway in mind later, you can ask about both on one visit.
Your estimate comes on paper, so you can read it again later, ask questions and decide on your own time without anyone waiting on your porch.
Straight answers to what Columbia homeowners ask us about brick, stone, permits and getting a masonry job started.
It depends on whether your address is inside Columbia's city limits. Inside them, Boone County sends you to the city's own inspections office, and outside them Boone County handles building inspections and issues building permits. Before work starts, we check which office covers your address and take care of any permit paperwork the job calls for.
Since June 1, 2026, the county requires a site and setback inspection, a check of where a building sits on your lot, before it issues a permit for any new structure outside Columbia's city limits. You, or a surveyor if needed, stake out the structure and property lines, and building starts only after approval and the permit. On a new garage or addition in the county, that comes first.
Usually not, because repairs and remodels fall outside the county's site and setback rule. The exceptions are work that needs a new or relocated septic system and buildings that were put up illegally to begin with. That rule covers only the county inspection, so we still check what your address needs before any repair starts.
Usually, yes, and that's most of what we do. We pick replacement brick by size, color and texture and mix mortar to the color of your old joints, because the goal is a repair you have to hunt for. Fresh mortar tends to look a little lighter at first, so I'll show you what to expect before we start.
Most of the time a repair is enough, and I'll tell you straight when it is. A rebuild makes sense when the brick itself is crumbling, a section is leaning or the cause runs deeper than the surface, and I'd rather find that cause than patch over it. Either way, you'll know why before you decide.
Yes. We're based in Columbia and work in Jefferson City, Fulton, Moberly, Boonville and plenty of other cities around them. We see a lot of the same older brick homes and new backyard projects in those cities, so the work is the same wherever your house is.
