What stone veneer is and what it takes

Stone veneer installation in Columbia gives a wall the look of natural stone with a thin facing that carries none of your house's weight, so it can dress up a foundation, a chimney or a plain block wall once that wall checks out.

Most folks call me because they've got a gray strip of block showing under the siding, a dated fireplace or a new wall they want to look like more than block. The price moves with the square footage, whether you pick natural or manufactured stone, how much the wall needs before stone goes on, and how many corners and windows we cut around. The schedule mostly turns on that prep work and the weather, and once I've walked the wall, the estimate gives you your own figure.

  • The same person estimates and checks

I come out to look at your wall and write the estimate myself, then stop by during the job and walk it with you at the end, so what we agreed on is what gets built.

  • A lead mason runs the crew

Our lead mason is on site running the crew day to day, so one experienced hand keeps the stone pattern, the joints and the cleanup the way we planned them.

  • In business since 2013

We've been doing brick, block and stone work since 2013. We're licensed and insured, and our work is satisfaction guaranteed, because I want the stone to look like it belongs on your house.

How we put stone on your wall

First I check the wall behind the stone, because veneer won't hold up on a wall that's already failing, and anything that needs fixing goes in the plan before we ever talk colors. Then our crew cleans the surface so mortar can grab it, and where it still won't, we fasten metal lath, a wire mesh, and trowel on a scratch coat, a rough first layer of mortar the stone can bite into. We lay the stone out on the ground first so sizes and colors mix the way you'd see in a real stone wall, set it row by row from the bottom up, and finish the joints and clean the face as we go so mortar doesn't stain it.

A lot of veneer jobs really start with the wall itself. If you're building new, concrete block walls make a solid backing for stone, and if the wall under your siding is cracked or giving out, foundation block wall installation puts it right first so the stone has something sound to sit on.

Where stone veneer works on a house

Bare block foundations

That gray band of block between your siding and the yard is the most common spot we cover, and stone there makes the house look finished and ties it into the landscaping.

Chimneys and fireplace walls

A chimney or fireplace surround can take stone inside or out. Brick behind it changes how we attach the stone, so I'll explain the method on site before we start.

Outdoor kitchens and garden walls

Stone over a block core is how a lot of outdoor kitchens, seat walls and planters get their look, because the block does the holding and the stone does the showing.

Indoor accent walls

A living room or entry wall in stone adds texture without the weight of full stone, since veneer is thin and carries no load, and indoors you get more joint styles to pick from.

Stone veneer questions from Columbia homeowners

These are the questions folks ask me most when they're thinking about putting stone on a wall in Columbia.

How much does stone veneer installation cost per square foot?

Installing stone veneer across the US usually costs about $25 to $40 per square foot, installed. Where your wall lands in that range depends on the stone you pick, how much prep the wall needs and how many corners and openings we work around. Your estimate gives you the figure for your own wall.

Can stone veneer go over my existing wall?

Usually, if the wall is sound. The industry's installation guide says manufactured stone shouldn't go over a deteriorating wall or over EIFS, a foam-and-stucco siding system. Brick takes care too, since one masonry group says manufactured stone shouldn't be bonded straight to clay masonry, so ask any installer which method they'll use instead. I'll tell you what yours needs.

Does dry stack stone work outdoors in Columbia?

Not well here. One older natural stone company guide recommends against open joints, with gaps between stones, outdoors wherever walls freeze and thaw, and keeps dry stack to indoor walls or warm climates. Weather records for Columbia show about a 50% chance of hitting 32°F before October 23, so for an outside wall the guide's advice points to mortared joints.

How long will stone veneer last on my house?

Put on the way the industry's guide recommends, manufactured stone can perform for decades. The same guide says most problems come from workmanship in the field, so who installs it weighs heavily on how it turns out. We're licensed and insured, and that's why the wall check and prep plan come first on every job we take.

Should I pick natural stone or manufactured stone veneer?

Both can look right, and the choice usually comes down to the look, the weight and your budget. If you go natural, that same stone company guide notes not every type is suggested for outdoor use and advises stone with a track record in your area's weather, so ask how a stone has held up around here.
